I just started a deadweight shaper playthrough.
When I got the Inferno wand in the mines I sold it as I will never have the AP to use it. I recently was given a quest to find it, but it has now been sold.

In the first two games you could buy things back from merchants, but they no longer seem to add your items to their inventory. Can I get the item back? If not should I

1: load up an old save OR 2: save the quest till I find another one?

It's early enough in the game to go with an old save and do it properly. You can find others later on, but you will get less experience for finishing the quest since it's based upon current level.
