With the spiders I assume you mean the GIFTS. they are north from the big Nephilim castle at the edge of the map. thy have a cave there. Its also west from fort Draco. when you get there, find the spider chief and talk to him about some mission. You get a quest to free a baby spider (or was it an eggsac?). When you did that, He will let you into a cave were empire soldiers were trapped. there is the brooch (Or am I confused with avernum 2, were you find in their cave a red empire pass?). EDIT: Actually, if you keep having trouble with the brooches, there are many websites who have wakthroughs. Just look at the "neat stuff" section of the spiderweb homepage.
