Been awhile, but I beleive you need to must to beet the game. Besides, I don't recall a single disadvantage myself. JUst some information here, and I beleive the gift here and there... As always with A1, I am stealing my information from Avernum Annotated Maps. It appears that you cannot get the fourth part of the password to the surface without joining the Scimitar. Thus, you must join the Scimitar to win, as were244 said. Oh yes, and there is no disadvantage.
