As far as I know, you can't get the spell in VotDT. You'll have to use piercing crystals.

If you're trying to get through the glowing gates, though, you need the opening stone.

And you can actually get into most areas of the school without bringing down the barriers...there are convienently located passable barriers in a lot of areas if you look for them.
