You know that in the lower part of the School there are two stairways down, right? Both stairways lead to different levels. One of them loeads to a level full of gremlins, which you need to fight past to get to the stairway to the main library. Onjce you have gotten past them you will be near the main library. Tell me when you get there and I will give more instructions...
