When I use first aid, it says something like
Use first Aid: On who? Click on portrait(or hit "1-6")

Shouldn't it be 1-4?

I'm using the windows version.

I think slots 5 & 6 refer to NPCs. Do you have any with your party?

I believe it says 1-6 even if you don't actually have any NPCs in your party at the moment. 5 and 6 are for NPCs, though.

Yes, but if you do get NPCs in your party, they'll go in slots 5 and 6, and you'll be able to cast spells and use First Aid on them by selecting 5 and 6.

Basically, it doesn't bother to count the number of members in your party, so it just tells you the maximum number that could possibly be in there.

Zephyr, slots 5 and 6 can only be used by NPCs who join your party. These NPCs don't appear in the boxes at the top left of your screen (that's only for the 4 characters you can create).

I assume you haven't picked up any of the NPCs so far? They don't join in the sense of the Avernum games, instead they follow your party and fight with you but you have no control over them. They don't stay with your party when you exit the scenario.
