I wrote to Spiderweb about this -

>Hi all,
>
>One of the efforts I'm trying to jumpstart is the construction of BoA custom graphics. Do you have/know of the specs for this yet? If you do and can share them, the user community can begin creating custom graphics for BoA now. Best case scenario is we have a modest library of custom graphics for BoA when it becomes available.
>--

>Brett Bixler

Jeff writes:

Take a look in the graphics files for Avernum 3 ... custom graphics will, by and large, look like that. You will not be limited to only one custom graphics sheet.

Feel free to pass this info on to the message boards.

- Jeff Vogel

So, we have an answer. I'd be happy to host the specs and an example or two, if somebody else wants to write them up.

Sweet. Too bad, that I not saw Avernum 3 'in action' yet. ;)

PCs, NPCs, and monster specs:

I think this is what is desired:

PCs:
Definition: A PC is a character that has the graphics set appropriate for joining your party.

Specs: Each image is 46X56. There are a total of 72 large images per PC. The right half (36) is "wearing armor," the left half (26) is "armorless." There are nine poses, and in each, the character faces 4 different directions (NE- so you see the back of the character, NW, SW- so you see the front of the character, SE).

Poses: The first row consists of passive characters, or non-hostile. There are 8 of these (4 armorless, 4 wearing armor, facing the directions already stated.
The second row consists of a character "on guard," how they look in fight mode but not attacking. This first "on guard" character is using a melee weapon.
The third row consists of a character attacking with a melee weapon.
The fourth row consists of a character "on guard" and armed with a pole weapon.
The fifth row consists of a character attacking with a pole weapon.
The sixth row consists of a character "on guard" and armed with a melee weapon and shield.
The seventh row consists of a character attacking with a melee weapon, and equipped with a shield.
The eighth row consist of the character seated in a chair.
The ninth row consists of the character's death poses, which are sequentially arranged such that an animation results upon the character's death. The character faces NE when they die.

The final images needed are 12X16 small images of the passive character- these are used on the outdoor map. Eight are needed, each facing a different direction (NE, NW, SW, SE, and again for armored).

***

NPCs:
Definition: An NPC is a character whose graphic set is used for creatures with whom the party can interact (like shopkeepers), but who can not join the party as they do not have the necessary equipment-based images.

Specs: There are 20 large images, same size as PCs.

Poses: Fortunately, there aren't nearly as many poses as for NPCs. These should take a lot less work.
The first pose is again the passive pose, facing NE, NW, SW, SE. There is no separate "wearing armor" or "unarmored" pose set.
The second pose is the "on guard" pose, which occurs when the party enters fight mode.
The third post is the attacking pose.
The fourth set is a seated pose, this is one of the major differences between NPCs and monster pics.
The fifth set is the death sequence. Again, creatures die facing the NE.

And again, smaller images are necessary for the map. Only four are needed, as there is no distinction between wearing armor and not.

***

Monsters:
Definition: Monsters exist solely to be killed, and should be used if the party has no need interact with these creatures.

Specs: There are 12 large images for each monster, by far the smallest. The images face NE, NW, SW, SE as always. Sizes remain the same.
The first set consists of a passive set, or perhaps an "on guard" set, depending on the whim of the artist.
The second set consists of an attacking set.
The third set is the death sequence, again facing NE.

And as always, the creature has 4 smaller graphics used on the map.

Hope this helps get things started, and please ask for any clarifications needed.

I noticed in the A3 graphics set that one creature - a giant - is split into top and bottom sheets, similar to BoE giant creatures. Is this a needed type? Or is this just a unique image?

Also, does anyone know the naming scheme for graphics on the PC side? On the Mac they are in a resource file, starting with #1500.

PCs use bitmaps and range from 700 to 7000. Most monsters, characters, and such are in the 1200s and later. Items are in the 1000s, terrains are in the 700s.

Tall monsters go bottom first, then top, and appear to be consecutive bitmaps.

BoA is in the Avernum series, so yes, it will have a similar key system.

OK, I have the character specs as best I can. I'll share a rough draft ASAP.

Now I need terrain specs. It looks like terrain is arranged on a 1X8 grid, with each cell being 48W X 56H pixels.

But the way the terrain is layed out needs some explaining. For example, is it critical where in a cell you place a chunk of terrain? It looks to be in the bottom part of the cell, but if we can give specific instructions, so much the better. As always, any help is appreciated, and your name will be included in the credits!

Damn Brett, handy information but you do love double posting.

Is there any point making custom graphics already, or are we sure BoA will arrive.

Terrain specs (walls):
Consist of 23 graphics of normal size (46x55), arranged in it appears, quite random order, and scattered throughout all the graphics. Only 10 graphics are needed for basic walls, to fit in with the graphics engine. These are:
South and east facing walls (35 pxls high) -south dark, east light

2x low walls, so the party can be seen (approx 7 pxls high)

2x corners, 1 facing in, one out (35 pxls high)

2x low half corners, 7 pxls high, just like a short version of low walls

2x some wierd stick like things, presumably where walls stop, 1 high 1low.

the high walls and low walls can all also have in them either : door; open door; window; portcullis; open portcullis, mould/crack

attached is an image of all the wall graphics so u can see what im talking about (graphics with a (*) underneath are the base wall graphics, with doors and stuff

Thanks, Mort! I would have never figured that would work. Do you know why? We should post this info to the BBS so others know of this technique.
