Quick question on diplomacy with the dead - I've defeated the vampire for the second time, and have now fully explored the main level in his castle, but I can't find where my next encounter with him is. How do I get below the first floor? I see the door leading down, but I can't unlock it, either through strength of power, tool use or magic.

Is there a key I need to find?

There's a room in the southeastern area of the castle, fairly close to where you met him the second time but a little further east. It's possible that you already visited it before triggering the second encounter with Vahkohs -- visit it again afterwards to trigger the third encounter.
