Assuming that a state larger than most countries only really has people living in one city is extremely insulting to the people from other places. A typical conversation for me would go like this. "I grew up in Queensland." "Oh, what part of Brisbane?" "There's a lot of Queensland that isn't Brisbane, you know." "Oh, sorry. Where were you?" "Do you know Aramac?" "...no." "Barcaldine?" "Nope." "Longreach?" "Sorry." "Rockhampton?" "Oh, I know Rockhampton! So you were near there?" "If eight hours drive is near, yes." I still sometimes use "American" to refer to a citizen of the United States, but only through lack of a better polite word. The rest of the time, they're Yanks.
