Anyone here seen "MIM Notes", the official journal of the Maoist International Movement? It's such a hoot. I mean, some of their criticisms of various capitalist outrages around the world seem quite well-aimed, but then you remember they're Maoists, and you have to shake your head in wonder at Pol Pot calling the Conrad Black. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. Because of course, which political party a person belongs to is much more important than the actual content of their arguments. EDIT: Unless you meant something else by that comment, of course. If I read it correctly, I think he's saying that the authors of those criticisms had themselves performed much worse outrages. Hence the hilarity. Plus a pun on Pol Pot's name. :P EDITed by the Department of Redundancy Department [ Friday, May 20, 2005 17:26: Message edited by: PoD person ] Posts: 293 | Registered: Saturday, May 29 2004 07:00 |

Well, to call yourself a Maoist is, at the very least, to associate your views with those of Mao and implicitly approve of his actions and philosophies, which one can't help but say were a little dodgy. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! MIM apparently sees itself as rigorously applying the ideology it endorses, namely Maoism, to everything it discusses. So I think the MIM members themselves would be the last to accept that there is any distinction between their arguments and their membership in their party. And I too think the Cultural Revolution was dodgy. [ Friday, May 20, 2005 19:06: Message edited by: Student of Trinity ] -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. The Great Leap Forward may have been less dodgy but it was more deadly. China is not currently communist, really. The Chinese Communist Party all but abandoned communism after Mao's death. The CCP did not abandon authoritarian control in any way, shape, or form, and it didn't suffer the kind of armed revolution that has toppled so many other communist regimes. "Communism with Chinese characteristics" or whatever the current jargon is amounts to capitalism. It's not quite identical to Western laissez-faire principles, but it's getting there. —Alorael, who dislikes the idea of skirting the edge (or skipping blithely over the edge) of academic integrity by lying about the nature of a source. Also note that an interview is only as valid a source as the person interviewed, and nobody here has any recognized or formal background in the study of communism. While you are at it, why not do some deepening? I live in Sweden (Sweden is the biggest country in Scandinavia.) so I know a lot about our democratic socialism. In sweden, the tax rates are aprroximately 30% (currently 31% and in Denmark 47%). The high taxes are good since it makes many public services free. I made a list of them below: -Free or cheap medical aid. Need to go to hospital? Do not worry to much about payments. -Free dentist until you are 18, afterwards full prise. -Free roads; no payments while driving. -Free or cheap shelters for homeless. -Goverment paid police/fire department. The high taxes gives many advantages and balance the differences between well-paid and poor. Thanks to our good financial politics we can manage many other matters, like the prisons (Last year we had many escapes due to poor psycologic health in the prisons.) or the unemployed (5,2% average unemployment.). Private business is legalized and supported. Whoever you are, you can for an instance start your own shop. Sadly, private business is very poorly paid, shopowners had ended up with only 6000SEK in the month (Equal to 800-900USD). Sweden is democratic but the voting system is a little unlike the US system. Here in sweden we vote in three different matters. Landsting (Did not find a translation but it is about how hospital and culture (Culture = Farming) while be treated.), Statsting (Party to rule the swedish state.) and kommunledning (Party to rule the municipal.). Yea let taxes loose. Our rates are around 40% depending on what you earn and what province or territory you live in. Anyone that would rather not live on a busy city intersection holding up a mottled piece of carboard that says "Need food. God bless." We pay taxes and hospital bills in America. And two and a half dollars for a gallon of gas. We need more nuclear power or something for electricity, too. But we don't have to worry about spontaneous takeover of our property, either, which is nice. Yeah that's true but just you wait the end is near. ;) What are you going to do when the door closes for good? Narnia remains open now. But how much longer? Paying taxes doesn't guarantee no spontaneous loss of property (In fact, one can argue that taxes are inherently spontaneous loss of property). They are, however, a necessary part of the functional kind of government that prevents the "KGB come, shoot whole family" problem. Paying taxes under a bad system, and America's is heading that way right now, is more likely to put you by that intersection than save you from it. Paying taxes under a good system means that you won't have to be there even if you don't have the money for that piece of cardboard. —Alorael, who would rather pay taxes and know that he'll have hospital care if he needs it it than pay fewer taxes and start worrying when the expensive procedures are necessary. Which is where insurance comes in, which is getting expensive too. Especially liability for young drivers such as myself. :P -------------------- -ben4808 For those who love to spam: CSM Forums RIFQ Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Health insurance is a tangled nightmare that impedes proper healthcare. Our system is both absurd and obscene. —Alorael, who was forced by circumstances to experience the Danish hospital system. The quality of care provided was excellent and the quality of not being buried in paperwork was even better. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
