Or in broader terms, it's how we tell the difference between morning and afternoon times. AM starts at midnight, PM starts at noon.

Isnt Greenwich at Prime Meridian and so AM/PM is before and after? Or,.... meridian stands for midnight, or rather, middle?

The meridian is the middle of the day, noon. Antemeridian is before noon, and postmeridian is after.

Meridians are the lines of longitude. AM and PM stand for
ante meridiem and post meridiem, which are simply Latin for 'before midday' and 'after midday' respectively.

When I was younger, I used to just think of it as 'after midnight' and 'post midday'. I know that its stupid, and I know the real ones now, but I still thought it was easier.

So did I. Don't laugh, please, even though I was aware at that point that "Post" is equivalent to "After" and there is no reason to name those two things in two different languages.

Well, P could also stand for "past", although there'd still be no good reason to use two different words to mean the same thing.

Actually, I though along those lines until I read the topic. How much we learn every day!

Amazing. Of course, I didn't let nay-one know about that little way. I wanted to keep it to myself :D .
