Just a suggestion, but many distributions of Linux have live CDs to let you test drive them. So, its the price of a single CD versus the time of formatting a hard drive twice, partitioning twice, etc. Personally, I'd recommend the Kubuntu version of Ubuntu, since I prefer KDE to GNOME.
