No one else uses my computer. And the files weren't deleted - I've checked in the Finder and they're all still there. The saved games 1 through 6 just stopped showing up in the Load and Save dialogues, even though the files were still there (fortunately none of those were my recent saved games), and the scripts seem to have been somehow corrupted.

I tried opening up a couple of the script files that were causing the errors in BBEdit, since they're supposed to be just plain text files, but they were complete gibberish - like the sort of thing you'd get if you opened up a binary file as text. The weirdest thing is that reinstalling the program didn't change that - but, when I installed it again in a different location from the original, checked the script files in the new installation to make sure they contained readable text this time, and then copied them manually into the old scripts folder, the scripts now appear OK, though I haven't tested them by running the game yet.

I'm just not sure how they got corrupted in the first place. Has anyone else had this problem?

I recently downloaded Geneforge 2, and it was running fine until recently, but then six of my saved games spontaneously disappeared - the slots just showed up blank - and I am now getting some odd error messages from it.

When I enter the Secret Tunnel, it says:

groupnpc.txt Error: Creature file bad header
groupnpc.txt: No body declared

And the exploding roamers in that area do not attack, though they do show up as red, meaning unfriendly. They just stand there and do nothing, and even when they explode on death there's no message.

In Saltmarsh, the message is:

z11servile.txt Error: tried to run an invalid creature script
z11servile.txt script failure: Invalid identifier aû in line 1 (the second character is a u with a circumflex accent, in case it doesn't show up properly here)
z11servile.txt Error: tried to run an invalid creature script

And the serviles in the northwest don't do anything. Like the roamers, they just stand there.

In Freegate:

callmons.txt Error: tried to run an invalid creature script
callmons.txt script failure: Invalid identifier a in line 1 (with a horizontal line over the a)
callmons.txt Error: tried to run an invalid creature script

And in both the Drypeak Warrens and Sharon's Grove:

door.txt Error: tried to run an invalid creature script
door.txt script failure: Invalid identifier Å in line 1 (capital A with a circle on top)
door.txt Error: tried to run an invalid creature script

The door to Sharon's house doesn't open, so I can't talk to her again. Both this area and the Drypeak Warrens I had previously entered with no error messages, but now they have these errors.

I tried qutting and restarting, and even downloading and reinstalling the game, but no luck.

Interestingly, I was a beta tester on Geneforge 1 and some of the Avernum games but wasn't on this one. And now I find myself submitting bug reports anyway. Clearly, it's my calling in life. :-)

Anyway, if anyone has any idea what all this might mean or what I can do about it, I would appreciate hearing from them. I'm running it on Mac OS X 10.3, and the game is version 1.02.

Thanks,

Lynna
