stuck at Basalt Fortress

I have gone down into the large room with a lot of pylons, but I can not open the door in the SW corner either. Any help on how to get past this stage of the game would be great. There's a lever in the downstairs area, near the room with the altar. It opens a gate that lets you get through to Rentar. It can be hard to see; turning up the brightness on your monitor helps.
