Okay, I'm clearly missing something that ought to be obvious... but I have absolutely no idea how to get into the Abyss. Help!

You cannot get into the Spire Fort until you get the mission to go there from The Castle. You should go there and do Houghton's missions until you get told to go there.

Hm... I'm well past Houghton's death at this point. Is the gate supposed to be open or is there another way in?

There's another way in. Have you finished the quest in the tunnels west of Fort Remote yet? You'll be sent to do the Spire mission after that.
