OK, Ive found the portal, but it says I have to smash machinery...I tried a hammer, but that didnt work...and theres a door in the south of the portal room that I cant get through...How do I get through that door, and what on earth can I smash the machinery with? Its driving me batty.

You need a rock to smash the machinery, I'm not sure about the door though.
