I believe someone tested to see if there was a maximum once and managed to pump characters' levels into the thousands. Of course, monsters can't go above level 100, so it's pretty pointless to have a party of characters significantly above that level. The High Level Party Maker utility can raise your party to level 250, making you more powerful than you will ever need to be to do anything.
