It's somewhat ironic that I'm asking this, because I'm usually the one who gives advice when others start such topics here. (I'd have continued the last topic of this kind, but that was closed). The thing is, I know a lot of different forum applications, but not free ones. I definitely want to host it myself, and for economic reasons it should preferably be free. Do I have any option besides phpBB (which I've heard is rather insecure)? I'll use phpBB, but only if there is no other option... (Points made in bold to prevent this thread getting flooded by "use phpBB" and "use ezboard" responses...) -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Desp uses PunBB, which, while not exactly laden with features, is free and efficient. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Excellent. I'm going to try that when I get home. :) -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. InvisionFree doesn't allow you to host it yourself. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

quote:As I said, I did want to host it myself. :) In fact, I trust InvisionFree more than any other remote-hosted services (since unlike ezboard they don't randomly delete posts, and also don't charge as much for ad removal), but seeing as they want money for a backup, I'd rather have it on my own database and server. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I could lend you benBB, though I haven't worked on it in a while, it's not joined in one file, it's not totally completed, it doesn't have many features, and you'd have to mess around with the database to actually get it going. :P -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

And now can someone explain to me how I managed to make a post that was half an hour after the last one, and did not see the last one? Ah well, Thuryl explained it already. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. When I was considering changing Polaris's forum software, I did quite a bit of research into different kinds. Actually, I think I posted some of my favorites if you want to check there. I used this list on Wikipedia as my primary resource, you might want to look at that. -------------------- Polaris Board Posts: 780 | Registered: Friday, February 1 2002 08:00 |
