In another thread a question was asked that could only be faced with a proper poll. Instead, you get this. After all, I started it by using a four syllable word in a 2 syllable zone.

Thuryl made some inane comment about pomp, marching bands, and certain circumstances.

Nope, I didn't know what he was talking about at first. I had never heard of "Pomp and Circumstance" before. It's rather interesting you made a poll about it, however.

I only know of "Pomp and Circumstance" because I have a CD with all kinds of classical stuff by English composers. I had no idea it actually is an existing song, I connected it with the English "Night of the proms".

I know of the song. I also know what both "pomp "and "circumstance" mean. Alas, I didn't get the pun until after reading this thread, because I hadn't looked at the original thread.

I saw the reference to "Pomp and Circumstance" almost immediately, not to mention the pun. I've heard it far too often at graduation ceremonies not to recognize it.

It's not your fault that you didn't know that 6 out of 10 saw that pun and avoided it like the plague. You didn't know the respect with which we treat Thuryl's words, and that's not a bad thing.
