Now it's complete. Unless, of course, someone starts posting Geneforge. Avernum 1 was alright, better than E1 and enjoyable. Not as good as A2. 7.0 [ Sunday, March 12, 2006 07:29: Message edited by: BainIhrno ] -------------------- "Let us see what the new day brings." - Temas, Areni. Visit my realm! Rate My Scenarios! Did you mean A2 for "not as good as A1". This IS A1. -------------------- "Let us see what the new day brings." - Temas, Areni. Visit my realm! Rate My Scenarios! I think an 8.25 is in order for A1... would've been higher if only there had been a quest list. Also, not having A2's superior animations counts against it. It beats A3, no matter how you look at it... the atmosphere, humor, and story are all very well-developed. It's a little sprawling and intimidating at first, really, but you warm to it quickly. -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. I hate undead. 8.7, although I'm not really sure about it. I'm very, very found of A1. It's just not quite as good as A2. —Alorael, who doesn't think rating the engine is fair. BoA scenarios don't have any unique engine to be rated on. It's not as though every designer has to come up with the quest list. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

A1 was better than E1 that is was based upon because Jeff added some new areas (the lost Slith city in the Giant lands). Tracking down the level 3 spells was a challenge. But best there were more slots for equipment until he got rid of the two one-handed weapons. No more hasted buzz saws. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

The only Avernum game that improved on its Exile counterpart. The only Avernum that managed to capture the atmosphere of the story and of the caves. Still can't deal with the engine. 8.5 -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy Encyclopedia Ermariana - Trapped in the Closet ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse! I had mixed feelings when I first heard of Avernum being made - especially after Nethergate which was a completely new thing among Spidweb games. A remake, the exact same plot with better graphics? I wasn't very thrilled about playing the same series over again. Nevertheless, Avernum 1 really did manage to improve on the original. The plot was easier to follow, and dialogue simpler (I never did like the "ask about..." option in exile dialogue). Also, the graphics had their own charm, different from that of the Exile series, and the height differences helped add to the atmosphere. So: 8,3 And now, for the real reason of my post: quote:Dude, you totally ripped my name. Posts: 353 | Registered: Monday, January 9 2006 08:00 |

For A1 a 6. I don't like the fact that you can "look" with the mouse...it just moves too fast...but anyway I like it, its just like A2 in magic, and it has the stronger "Avernum-feeling" of all the games... It's the first (well, more like fourth) venture into the caves. It introduces the new graphics, and I (for one) treat both the E and A engines basically the same (although I do still miss AoE spells, and A4's are no substitute). The plot wasn't as good as A2's, but it beats A3+4 out of the water. Combat was fairly mediocre throughout, but then again, when is it not? This is the definition of "standard avernum fare" that JV has (for better or worse) spent his time moving away from quite steadily. 7.5 -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

The only Avernum that seemed to me an improvement over its Exile counterpart. I don't like Avernum graphics (as much as Exile graphics). The loot that the monsters drop is too monotonous and number of spells too small. The plot and the quests are best parts. I think some new skills were also interesting. (edit: ) No, no, no. 9 [ Sunday, March 05, 2006 13:48: Message edited by: Milu ] Posts: 259 | Registered: Saturday, June 1 2002 07:00 |

4.5 - A derivative game deserves a derivative score. 6.0 (Exile) - 1.0 for the lack of originality - 0.5 for the nerfed spell system, etc. + 0.5 due to the fact that Exile's interface really did suck - 0.5 for the lousy iso graphics. -------------------- http://desperance.net Posts: 35 | Registered: Friday, March 3 2006 08:00 |

I sort of liked this, the world was fleshed out quite well. Better than the third installment, not as good as the second. 8.0 -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power! Posts: 3726 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |
