E3 and A4 have rating topics. We've got to keep going. :P

I thought it was a good game. Better than most BoA scenarios, and pretty fun. BoE beats it by a longshot, though.

8.0

EDIT: No no no no no, what was I thinking?

It gets a 9.0 from me. I can justify giving it an 8.0 or 8.5 by how it's set up, and between the added quest log and Dark Waters I feel justified in giving it a round 9.

Will this earn me the disgust of a significant portion of the Blades community? Probably. I still happen to enjoy A2 a lot.

I'll top that and give it a 9.5. I don't care if that makes me a bad person, but A2 was the only Avernum that I ever managed to completely play through more than once... and I enjoyed each time as much as the last. It's just awesome, really...

Ah, for the days when Vahnatai were more than walking plot accelerators... the token appearances before the ultimate confrontation in A3 just weren't any good.

A2 has the good story of E2, and the interface niceties of Avernum. Unfortunately, a lot of those niceties interfere with the atmosphere, the single greatest thing about E2.

If I hadn't played Exile 2 first I might rate it higher, but given that I did: 8.0.

I'm going to take heat over this, but I actually liked A3 better than A2 and A1, unlike in the Exile series.

8.6.

The atmosphere suffered severely for the new perspective. Exile 2 made me truly claustrophobic for stretches, the acid wit was toned down a little (by that point Jeff was on a family-friendly kick), and I recall a Survivor reference.

Blech. Whatever happened to the Jeff Vogel that wrote Exile 2, I miss him.

A2 gets a nice, shiny, 9.6 rating. The E2 story and the Avernum interface make it perfect for me. By far my favourite Spiderweb game.

Where is the A3 topic? There's an E2, E3 and an A2 and A4 topic, but I don't see the A3 topic anywhere. Also, what about E1/A1?

Apparently still annoying.

It has a good beginning, a great "mid-beginning," and then slowly devolves... But it's still never as bad as, say, A3.

A good, solid 9.0 for A2, the only one I registered. I loved the vahnatai bandit fort, probably the best dungeon of the whole game.

Edit: Vahnatai is not a proper noun.

I love this game. I'm probably biased, because it's the first Spiderweb game I ever played, but it's amazing. It's not just "attack the nephil fort" it's "defend against their attack and recover a secret map that enables you to use a back way in". The vahnahti and the journey down to their realms is just amazing. The only bad thing, I felt, was that Garzahd was never really fleshed out as an enemy. He's just something I have to kill.

And all the little touches that make Avernum Avernum: sudden attacks by fungi, seeing Khoth in chains, the muchrooms one that one place that kill you if you eat them...

A2 gest a good 9.2. There were some moments when it got a bit boring, but overall it's a great game. Better than A3.

I have to admit, A2 is a classic.
A fair 8 out of 10, I'd say.

It's just not as fun as Exile II. It lacks the atmosphere of Exile II, it lacks the immersiveness, it lacks the good graphics. The story is the same, and for that it's still an 8.

I'll give it a 9.

It's the best of the series. Lots to do although I thought the Vahnatai and Erika's tests were better in Exile 2. The Dark Passage could have used a new ruin to make it different.

In my opinion, not quite as good as its Exile counterpart but close.

I don't like Avernum graphics (as much as Exile graphics). The loot that the monsters drop is too monotonous and number of spells too small. The story and the quests are best parts.

I think you mean Sulfras, not Khoth. Khoth does not have an appearance in A2 unfortunately. He was my favorite of the dragons too.

He does make an appearance without physically being present. Some text mentions seeing him surrounded by Empire soldiers in a fort that your adventurers can't reach.

5.5 - Exile 2's score with -1 for the diminished play value (neutering magic, etc.), -0.5 for the inferior graphics, and another -0.5 for the fact it's a cynical remake of a good game.

I couldn't really play the game because I found the engine too annoying.

Why in the world are you rating a game you don't really like at a 7.5? (Then again, I may be the extreme one.)

Anyway, I bump my rating up to a 9.5. I haven't played E2, so everything about it was fun and it got a lot of replay. It's definitely the best of the trilogy. The Empire War and the vahnatai made for an excellent plot. No complaints about the engine. I still like that heretic vahnatai fort, for some unknown reason. Also, I have recently (re)discovered the joy of Divine Warrior. Finally, it has nostalgic value.
