The Matrix is a vomitrocious parody of every piece of literature that has been carefully crafed this century. "Oh, I get the Matrix! If you don't like it, CLEARLY you didn't get it... See, when Neo did his Jackie-Chan Kun-Fu, it actually represented Jesus on the cross, and..." Don't get me started. I hate what the Matrix has done. Edited to remove TM's gratuitous work-around of the censor. Bad TM! Therefore I never go the movies but read the books. I didn't see Matrix and assume that it has to do with intelligent/human machines. If the machines then conspire, riot and try a revolution, the term Maschinenrevolution makes sense. But nevertheless it's written with 3 "n"s. ....(.(( :) ... -------------------- ^ö^ vegetarians are sexy. Posts: 1420 | Registered: Wednesday, October 2 2002 07:00 |

Isn't Maschine feminine? I'm not, BTW, using the plural form. -------------------- 人 た ち を 燃 え る た め に 俺 は か れ ら に 火 を 上 げ る か ら 死 ん だ Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

You may not be using the plural, but you should. Even if it were just one machine revolting, we'd call this a 'Maschinenrevolte'. Sorry, maybe not very logical, but that's how it is. But there are other possibilities like for instance 'Roboteraufstand', 'Robo-Revolte', 'Stahl und Eisen Revoluzzer', 'Alu-Aufstand', 'Techno-Revolte', etc. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1828 | Registered: Saturday, January 11 2003 08:00 |

yes, it's "die Maschine". It's normally never used in singular form, sounds very abstract like this. We rather would say: "Der Sturm der Maschine", if it's only one. "Der Maschine-Sturm"?.... well, confusing. We would not use "Maschine" in connection with "Umsturz" because it points to the literally fall, not to the revolution. But Maschine Umsturz is exotic and cryptic - even for Germans. edit: ef, bist Du Deutsche? It comes from the practice of, when TM had been younger and more ignorant with respect to German, claiming that various personages could not protect you -- to wit, FDR and Mao, I recall -- that the Machine could protect you, and that you could follow the Machine and live. Thus it is not referring to a mechanical revolution, but a revolution of die Maschine. And no, I have absolutely no idea what any of that's supposed to mean. Mass hysteria. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

The concept really isn't designed to "make sense" in any language, really. So yeah, singular it is. -------------------- 人 た ち を 燃 え る た め に 俺 は か れ ら に 火 を 上 げ る か ら 死 ん だ Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I think linguistic absurdism is something very difficult to explain to someone who does not speak your language natively. I mean, I see what TM is getting at with Machine Revolution. It isn't a revolution of machines, or of machines, it is a revolution of The Machine, where The Machine is what ever. Think Dance Dance Revolution. It's not a revolution of dances. -------------------- I've got a pyg in a poke. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Yeah, but translating it as "machine upheaval" still doesn't quite work. :P -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I like that you make me look at my language with an outsider's eyes. Makes me aware of things I wouldn't have noticed myself. A 'Maschinenrevolte' is a 'Maschinenrevolte', regardless of singulars or plurals. Worse, it refers to a process within the machine/s and/or a process the machine/s started elsewhere. So much for precision. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1828 | Registered: Saturday, January 11 2003 08:00 |
