Revisionist History Good read. I always like Orson Scott Card's work, and when I stumbled across this site today, I was pleasantly surprised. In a recent topic on these boards, it was stated and concurred by multiple members that the United States is evil and the whole world would be better off if this country had never been founded. I suggest these people read this article, as well as some others by Orson on the site. That kind of anti-American attitude not only frightens me, it also seems to be based on a pretty one-sided and unfair view. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I think the United States is a pretty cool place, and the world would definitely be worse off without it: discuss. Or flame me, whatever floats your boat. Upon further examination and a brain fart, it seems to me that you only have to fill in the date, print your name in the first blank, and sign only 1 of the other blanks. When Jeff gets it, he signs the other blank and that's it. At least, I hope that's how it works, cause that's what I'm going to do. -------------------- I hate signatures. TM does have good taste, although I'm confused as to why his Final Fantasy list stops at 7. I really liked 9 and 10, and though a lot of people really hated 8, I thought it was pretty good overall. And 10-2 has hot, scantily clad babes throughout. What's not to like EDIT: And also, how can he list FF2 and leave off FF3? I thought 2 was crap and 3 was fairly enjoyable to play. Or if you really like Geneforge, you could try Geneforge 2. I thought it was a pretty good sequel. <Looks oddly at Alorael, unsure if he left out GF2 by accident or on purpose> -------------------- "... and approximately one sea turtle." Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

Ok, I got the form, and I understand what it says and that I should print it, sign it, date it, and mail it back, but the last part has me confused. Do I need to have 2 notary signatures on it before I send it in? And the blank at the bottom that says e-mail address, am I supposed to put mine there? Your help is greatly appreciated. -------------------- I hate signatures. Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

The most likely way to get suggestions in the next Geneforge would be to wait until a little after BoA is out and email him a list of the best suggestions. He does listen to fan mail. -------------------- I hate signatures. Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

The problem with seizing property is that often the government gets a little trigger happy. For example, I am a minor. If I have some marijuana in my dad's truck and get pulled over, his truck could (and probably would) be seized, even if it was the only vehicle we owned. All because I had some pot in his truck. Taking property in this manner is a fairly common occurance where I live. If someone gets busted for drugs, you can just about guarantee that whatever can legally be seized, will be seized. I think more discretion when seizing property is certainly warranted, especially since the earlier example actually happened to someone in my community, and it was the family's sole source of transportation. They were struggling financially, and the son with a few doobies in the dad's truck cost them pretty sorely. -------------------- "... and approximately one sea turtle." Free Will in General | |

I find that no longer believing in free will is incredibly depressing, because it eliminates, to me, the point of life. If every decision has already been made and the entire course of the universe decided a billion years ago, what's the point of my life? Doesn't that make everything that happens to me independent of what I do? If, on the other hand, free will exists and I can make whatever choice I want whenever I want, that gives me hope because I have a degree of control over what happens to me. Without free will, we are basically victims (or benefactors, as the case may be) of fate and nothing more. I aggree that, as a whole, trends are somewhat predictable, but not entirely. Trends can be broken. And you still can't predict what each person will do. -------------------- "... and approximately one sea turtle." Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

I know it's possible, I was refering to the fact that it's not possible for the chances to be less than zero. There have been many discussions on this subject, and the fact is: it won't happen. And on music, Jeff has already said he likes the way it's handled now and isn't planning on changing it. Music unnecessarily increases download time, something Jeff just isn't willing to do. -------------------- I hate signatures. Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

I have a toothpick in my left hand. I am going to do 1 of 2 things: break it, or not break it. Either way, you can argue that what I did was determined by my past experiences, but that's only in hindsight. Because you can never observe every tiny nueron firing in my brain, and because you can never have an intimate knowledge of every event that has ever happened to me in my entire life and how that affected my decision, you will never be able to predict my action. Thus, while my action may have been determined before it happened, noone would ever KNOW that it was determined before it happened, thus it would always be a surprise. By extention, my decision will affect you in some way. If you can't even know what my decision will be, then you can't tell how it will affect you and sway future decisions you will make. So, even if free will doesn't exist, the illusion that it exists will always be there. And if the illusion of free will will always exist no matter what we do, then we should just continue to live our lives under the impression that it exists to avoid apathy, depression, and hopelessness that is spawned by no longer believing in free will. In other words, for all practical purposes, we can just assume that free will exists and live our lives accordingly, since trying to disprove its existence gains no one anything in the end. Or at least, that's my uneducated opinion. Prove me wrong. -------------------- "... and approximately one sea turtle." Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

Music: Crappy suggestion. It won't happen. Period. Jeff has already said he's sticking with the current system of sound effects, and music inevitably gets redundant and annoying, with only 2 exceptions I can think of. Of all time. If you miss music, play a cd. Flying creations: A nice thought, but again: won't happen. Requires way to much work for no more benefit that would be gained. Internet Play: ROTFLMAO. If I had a nickel... I would be 5 cents richer. But anyway, if it was possible, the chances of that happening would be less than 0. Since it's not, we'll just round it to 0. Suggestions I think have a better than 95% chance of being implemented: numbers 3,5,6,9,10,11,13, and 16 from my last post. I think others have merit, but I don't know how much of a change Jeff would be willing to make. No matter how he handles GF3, I'll probably end up buying it. For your suggestions, think seriously about what that kind of change would entail, and how severely it would change the way the game is played now. This shouldn't be a dream list for some game that hasn't been made, it should be ideas for small changes to improve a game that already exists. I'm not intolerably bitter and acidic, am I? -------------------- I hate signatures. Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

Of course, you can twist the logic of the phrase "RPG" to include almost every game made, or only the games that have levels, turn-based combat, and fantasy worlds. It's all a matter of interpretation. Personally, I fall somewhere between the two, and would advise the newcomer to start with Avernum 1 rather than just skipping to A3. -------------------- "... and approximately one sea turtle." Economic Left/Right: 1.25 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 1.08 Closest to Tony Blair. Honestly, I expected to be way further NE than it showed up. I think that there is a high propensity of Southwestern-inclined people on Spidweb, but I also think some of those questions were phrased in a way that skewed everyone's score further to the SW than it might have been otherwise. -------------------- "... and approximately one sea turtle."
